The disadvantages of oral magnesium products

It is important to note that taking oral magnesium products may be a serious challenge for some of people. In several instances, this issue can make it more difficult for the body to rebuild adequate levels of intracellular magnesium.

Problems with the rate of absorption of magnesium-oxide pills

The actual absorption rate of oral magnesium products is not properly considered when establishing the dosing recommendations. For this reason, the application of slightly ionized forms of magnesium may result in inadequate amounts of intake. According to a study carried out in 2001, magnesium-oxide – the active agent of several commonly used dietary supplements and one of the cheaper magnesium compounds available – has an absorption rate in the intestines as low as 4%.

If the magnesium RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) for adults (300-400 mg /day) is administered in this less absorbent form, the body will only be able to utilize around 12-16 mg of the magnesium.

The laxative effect of magnesium compounds

The other important characteristic of most of the magnesium compounds is the fact that they have a various degree of laxative effect in the body. The extent of this effect depends on the amount of the magnesium compound that is applied at once. The applied dosage can impact bowel movement and the consistency of the stool as well.

Therefore, depending on the dosage, the patient may experience a rather strong laxative effect, and, as a direct consequence, the evacuation period of the content of the bowels is shortened. It is of key importance, as pointed out in the book “Holy Water, Sacred Oil: The Fountain of Youth” by Shealy M.D.: …it is a widely accepted fact by many experts that the absorption rate of magnesium is highly dependent on the time it spends in the intestines. The minimum amount of time for magnesium to take its best effect should be as close as 12 hours passing through the gastrointestinal system. Less amount of time spent in the intestines may radically decrease the efficiency of magnesium absorption.

Due to the varying degree of magnesium absorption in each person, it is not an easy task to try and determine how effectively oral magnesium supplements will absorb. All of the above factors make it almost impossible to calculate with the outcome of magnesium intake.

Transdermal magnesium supplements: The solution

Transdermal magnesium is applied directly on the skin, and it does not have to pass through the digestive system. Among several of its applications are lotions, gels and magnesium foot baths and baths, all of which prove to be more efficient than oral supplements.
